Selling a university by creating a music video for Daniel Johns… this project made our hearts sing by proving how powerful creative collaboration can be!
When Guts was tasked with promoting University of Newcastle’s animation festival, we had the big idea to run a local animation competition and showcase the incredible creative talent in our city. We approached Daniel Johns, shot footage of him at his home, and asked animators to submit their best illustration of Daniel.
37 animators were selected, mentored and each given 5 seconds of the clip to create frame by frame in the painstakingly hand drawn rotoscoping technique. The result blew our minds! When the whopping 2494 frames were combined to create Daniel’s official clip for ‘Going on 16’, these creative geniuses had taken the track to a place we could never have dreamed of.
It was wild, psychedelic and in Daniel’s words “a bit trippy and surreal… they’re the perfect visual accompaniment for a song like this.”
The clip received national coverage on the Today Show, Rage, 7news, Triple J, Triple M, Lost at E Minor and Monster Children and continues to raise the profiles of these inspiring local animators.
